Mission and Vision


The social and economic situations in Japan and other countries have been rapidly changing and becoming much perplexed. In order to face and successfully address these changing situations, it is of paramount importance to create the young people who can see the micro and macro level changes in social and economic situations, the direction of cultural changes and clearly understand the basic structure of socio-economic condition, and create the new cultural paradigm accordingly.

 Having realized the importance of these changing phenomena, Onomichi city aims to become an international city of arts and culture, and Onomichi University, which is the public university of Onomichi city, tries to respond to these changes of socio-economic and cultural situations. In order to respond to these changes of trend of the world, we need to have a firm view and futuristic vision of history. This could be well suported by the scientific knowledge, the people who respond to the dignity of human that is the firm basis of achievement, and the highly professional knowledge and activity. In this context, Onomichi University aims to develop such an important cultural and knowldge paradigm shift and to create the students who can contribute to the regional society and are, consequently, respected by all Japanese and foreigners.


History of University


 Onomichi University is located in Onomichi City which has many attractive aspects, including many temples and shrines built more than 1000 years ago. Onomichi City was one of the main places in Seto Inland Sea area and flourished economically. It is also known as a city of art, literature and culture.

 About half a century ago (1946), Onomichi City established a public women’s special college. In 1952, the college was developed into Onomichi Junior College. In April of 2001, Onomichi Junior College was developed into Onomichi University. And in April of 2005, Graduate Schools were added to the university.
